I was delighted to accept when the Hotel Olympic Sidirokastro in Greece asked me to provide them with contemporary professional images that they could use in their printed marketing material and on their website.
An online presence is vital for hotels as a growing number of travellers are booking accommodation online, either directly with the hotel or through a third-party booking site. High-quality images are imperative, and we always start with a thorough consultation with the hotel’s owner or manager, to determine how they want to promote themselves to potential guests and what they believe their best attributes or unique selling points (USPs) are. For the Olympic Hotel and Spa, it was that they offered the relaxed atmosphere of a spa resort in a town location, offering guests the best of both worlds.
The hotel had recently undergone refurbishment, and we felt it very important to give the professional photos a high-end, luxurious feel. The owners want to appeal to discerning visitors who like indulging themselves, so we focused a lot on making sure the luxurious textures were clearly displayed whether it was the satin throws on the bed or the glossy mosaic tiles in reception and the spa.
We chose to record the hotel without guests to highlight both the sense of space and also the feeling of exclusivity. Even though they are staying in a hotel, people appreciate their privacy and a public bar or lounge feels more private and relaxed when it is not crowded with other people. You will notice that there are several images which have been staged as if a partner is just out of shot. This trick of the trade makes it simple for guests to put themselves into the picture and imagine that the glass of orange juice has been freshly squeezed just for them, or that they are sitting by the fire with a glass of wine, just waiting for their lover to arrive. When it comes to professional hotel photography, a picture has to speak at least one thousand words!
The Olympic Hotel and Spa is a city hotel with average views. Although there is one shot depicting a private balcony, you will notice that most of the images are of the interior and focus on the chic decor and upmarket amenities rather than the area around the hotel. Bedrooms and bathrooms are shown in full, as guests want visual reassurance that the facilities are of a high standard. I used several full frame lenses, including a Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L and the EF 11-24mm f/4L, to accurately portray these rooms, with post-editing to ensure there was no distortion.
