Styling in Santorini Island

That beautiful island of is close to my heart so I was excited to do this work showcasing wedding style and bridal fashion. When we snap weddings in the Greek Islands, or anywhere else, the focus is always the newlyweds. The clothing, accessories and setting are all chosen to make the bride and groom stand out – they are, understandably, the stars of the show. With styled images, however, the focus is less on the people and more on the clothing and the location. We create aspirational pictures that fuel the imagination of a bride and groom, showing them how their wedding could look.

Adesola Tolefe of Elizabeth Reine was responsible for the creative direction of the project. As an event planner and designer, Adesola is an expert at transforming an idea or a suggestion into stunning reality. Adesola hits the perfect balance between understanding wedding trends and knowing what never goes out of style, which is why her events are so memorable.

The Canaves Oia Suites was the location for the shoot. The award-winning venue enjoys some of the best views in Santorini, and for an island famous for its breathtaking scenery, that is saying something! Oia is renowned for the beauty of its sunsets which makes Canaves perfect for a wedding. Just imagine yourself as the couple in these images, holding hands on the cliff-top terrace and exchanging vows against the backdrop of the Aegean Sea before dining on delicious fresh local food and dancing the night away under the stars. The desserts came from the renowned Santorini Pastisserie Glikaki.

Every bride needs a bouquet and in-demand Santorini florist, Betty of Betty Flowers, created the wedding flowers, using roses in white, cream and blush to reflect the beauty of the natural surroundings, and also to look wonderful against the romantic light created by the lanterns and candles that were used to decorate the venue. All white can sometimes look stark in bright sunlight, but by using soft cream and orange flowers, the effect is softened,  so the flowers sit comfortably in the environment, looking magical in the afternoon, at sunset, or by candlelight.

A beautiful bride deserves a beautiful bridal gown. Our bride was dressed in Amanda Wakeley and Ellis Bridal, while her bridesmaids wore gowns from the Kelsey Rose collection. There are several key factors to consider when choosing a destination wedding dress.

1. The style and fabric of the dress. An outdoor setting on a clifftop in the Mediterranean calls for a floaty dress made from soft, lightweight fabrics. These dresses are elegant and fluid, with jewelled bodices and lace inserts that allow the bride to pare back her jewellery and makeup to stay comfortable in the heat.

2. Hair and makeup are best done by a local, or someone who understands the products best suited to the climate. Our models’ hairstyles were created by Lorena Sabou, while their fantastic makeup was the work of Ateca Akwue.

3. What amenities you will have available to you, and how you will transport your wedding gown and bridesmaid dresses. This detail is one that brides can easily overlook, but it is vital if you do not want your expensive designer outfit to look like a wrinkled nightgown!

Blue and white are a classic colour combination and one which embodies the beautiful Santorini buildings, the sky and the sea. The groom’s blue suits were the perfect foil to his bride’s bright dresses, with the colour saying “summer” while the classic two-button suit jacket adds a degree of formality. The soft shades of sapphire, amethyst and seafoam green of the bridesmaids’ dresses complement the surroundings, while the floaty chiffon skirts echo the bride’s dress for a fantastic sense of cohesion. Each item looks perfect on its own, yet combines with the other outfits couple and group shots. The men wore Scabal suits and were styled by Joe Woolfe.

As these images show, no decorative detail is too small to consider. Everything matters, including items like menus and place cards. Paul Antonio Scribe provided the stationery. Other details to notice include the bride’s headpiece by Kate Edmondson, jewellery by Poniros Oia, and shoes from a selection by Freya Rose.
