Maria & Akis | A “Day After” in Santorini

Even though they live abroad but married in their homeland Macedonia Greece, Maria and Akis wanted a session in Santorini island. Since I often work in Cyclades, I know the islands exceptionally well and was able to help them choose locations based on the sort of shots they wanted. Cyclades is a beautiful complex of 33 islands in Aegean Sea. Many popular islands are a part of it such as Santorini, los, Paros and Mykonos. After consultation with the couple, we settled on two areas: Oia and Imerovigli. Oia is always a fantastic choice and not only because it is so picturesque. As one of the most significant regions on the island, it has a wealth of excellent hotels who can help you plan your spacial day, whether you want someone to take the reins and prepare everything from guest accommodation to your hairdresser, or just want help booking a cliff top restaurant for your reception.

Imerovigli may be less-known than Oia, but it is no less beautiful. Like Oia, it overlooks the famous Santorini caldera. The Santorini we recognise today resulted from a colossal eruption in around 1610 BCE, but excavations indicate it was inhabited even earlier than that, and you can see some of the remnants of Santorini’s history in Akrotiri area.

Even though Maria had only been married a few short weeks before this session, she loved the opportunity to be a “bride” again, and she looked incredible in her beautiful white wedding dress with its intricately decorated back! After watching the sort of breathtaking sunset for which Oia is famous, Maria exchanged her bridal dress for a slinky evening dress in an eye-catching red with shoulder detail. Akis could hardly take his eyes off his stunning wife, and we had fun shooting some posed ones in the hotel and by the pool.

The whitewashed buildings and sapphire domes of Imerovigli was the setting for the relaxed, daytime shots. Maria chose two outfits for these pictures – white mini-dress which still felt “bridal” thanks to its lace sleeves and colour, and a floaty skirt in pale blue paired with a contrasting white top and sunhat. Blue and white outfits work so well against this backdrop, and Akis coordinated his clothing to Maria’s.

Having a post-wedding or a honeymoon Santorini photoshoot is a growing trend. These images do not replace the wedding day’s ones but enhance it in the same way as an engagement, and are always a lot of fun as there is not the pressure of a wedding!
