A family photoshoot in Santorini

When Luisa and her family took a once-in-a-lifetime long holiday, they were keen to ensure they had a special way to remember the occasion. Lusia had seen some of my work as a Santorini family photographer and contacted me in advance to arrange their photo session in Santorini.

By the time I met Luisa and her family, they had already enjoyed a fantastic time cruising from Miami to the Med. We only had a day on this beautiful island, and I wanted to make sure they were able to do some sightseeing as well as enjoy their family photoshoot. Santorini is small and relatively easy to navigate, so we started the shoot on the coast in Oia, before moving on to the Santo Winery near the hilltop village of Pyrgos.

Even if you have never been to Santorini, it is likely you will have at least seen photos of this beautiful Greek island. The iconic white buildings with their cobalt-blue roofs are immediately recognisable, while the mountainous terrain and gorgeous beaches are the results of a volcanic eruption some 3,500 years ago. The sunsets over the Aegean Sea are truly spectacular and a favourite backdrop for wedding and family photo session in Santorini.

Oia is in the north of the island, nestled on, and in some cases, in the cliff face, with some houses and shops having been carved out of the volcanic rock. If you are planning a photo session in Santorini, then it definitely helps to have an experienced Santorini family photographer on board. I know the island very well and was happy to share my knowledge with Luisa so that they could get a genuine flavour for the island rather than merely the brief touristy view that many visitors on a day-trip from a cruise liner see.

Luisa’s family consisted of her husband, mother and two adult nephews. During the planning session, we discussed the different group and couple shots Luisa wanted to be taken, as well as the potential backdrops we would use. The family chose to stick to a blue and white palette for their outfits that complemented each other as well as the location, creating a cohesive album of photos where everything is in harmony and nothing distracts from the subjects. I am especially fond of the picture of Luisa and her husband against the backdrop of the azure sky and sea, and their cruise liner a dot in the background. It is romantic without being overly sweet, and something they can happily display in their home.

After we had wandered a little around Oia and seen the charming buildings that are so typical of the Greek Islands, we made the short journey to the Santo Winery for the last part of our Santorini photoshoot . The fertile volcanic soil is ideal for growing grapes and Santorini wines are delicious. The Santo Winery is high on the cliff, with the restaurant enjoying spectacular views over Santorini’s caldera and offering an impressive menu of both food and wine. The family enjoyed plates of delicious Greek antipasti featuring plump, juicy olives, stuffed vine leaves, artichokes, sun-ripened tomatoes and crunchy breadsticks, washed down with glasses of crisp white wine made from Athiri, Aidani and Assyrtiko grapes which are native to this region.

I left the family to enjoy their lunch and the rest of their day, thankful to have had the opportunity to have shared some of the island’s best spots with them for their photo session in Santorini.
